Fox exploring the beaches of California

Last year, we packed up our dog Fox and our two kittens, Barley and Rye, and moved to our home in East Tennessee for the summer. Over the course of that year, we ended up going back and forth between New Orleans and Tennessee quite a few times with all three animals in tow. It might’ve seemed like a lot to some people, but we’d actually already become accustomed to traveling with our pets! In 2018, we spent three months road tripping through the West with Fox, taking him on all of our adventures and learning what worked for him (and us!) and what didn’t.

This past year of traveling with our two cats in addition to our tiny doggo definitely had a learning curve (the cats are a bit more energetic than sweet sleepy Fox), but we made it work. The reality is traveling with a pet can be difficult, but if you’ve done your due diligence preparing, it is so so worth it for the joy of seeing the world with your furry little friend by your side. I’ll never forget our time in Sedona with Fox where we got to watch our tiny boy leap and jump and prance and wag his tail all across the red rocks, or the time in Northern California where he got to run across the rocky coast and chase the seagulls.

From car safety gear to calming remedies to portable litter boxes and more, today we’re going over our top favorite finds in pet travel accessories! Check out our picks below and let us know what you would add to our list!

1.) Booster Seat with “Airbags” | We treat our furry little guys like they’re our children, and part of that is making sure they’re just as safe in the car as we are. This booster seat hooks onto the back of your car seat and then has a clip to attach your dog’s harness. In the case of an accident (or just having to stop short), your doggy friend will be safe and secure. The front and rear cushions are inflated to act as airbags for added protection.

2.) Cat Calming Spray | This homeopathic remedy aims to keep your cat as zen as possible in stressful situations, including travel. Our pets have no clue what’s going on when they are taken out of their comfy homes and put into a fast moving car on a bustling street, so extra measures should be taken to keep them at peace.

3.) Wild One Pet Carrier | File it under fashion! After years of having a pretty ratty carrier for Fox, we finally upgraded to this carrier. It’s got great storage pockets and a sturdy design, while still being able to be broken down easily for storage. A+ for quality and gorgeous aesthetic!

4.) Pet Tote with Storage | This cost effective option is great for going around town with your small dog or cat and takes up less space than a carrier. Just put it over your shoulder like any other tote, put treats in the side pocket, and you’re all set.

5.) Booster Seat Option 2 | Just like No. 1 listed above, this booster seat adds safe and secure protection along with comfort. We’re including it because it comes in stripes and different colors if you’d prefer something a little more exciting.

6.) Infinity Leash | The infinity leash basically is a dog leash that can be clipped into different functions, acting as a long leash, short leash, or double leash for two dogs at one time. It can be hooked onto a collar or harness, and you can even get a harness and pet waste carrier in the beautiful olive colorway to match! We love a monochromatic moment :)

7.) Car Safety Harness for Small to Large Dogs | This is the most cost effective car safety option on the list, and the only one suitable for large dogs. It connects the seatbelt to a dog harness so that your pup is safe in the case of an accident, but doesn’t include the bed component of No. 5 and No. 1, which may not be suitable for big dogs or tighter car spaces.

8.) Calming Chews for Dogs | People are always surprised to find out Fox is more anxious than our kitties during road trips! A little calming chew a couple of hours before we leave (and during the road trip depending on duration and package instructions) goes a long way to keeping our little guy feeling relaxed.

9.) Kitten Travel Kennel & Litter Box | Having cats loose in the car is kind of a huge hazard (hello, cat trying to claw my face while I’m driving), so we keep ours in a kennel. Ideally you’d have one that has a spot for food and litter to make sure they have a place to do their business.

We hope this has been helpful for your planning your own travel with your furry friends. Let us know if you have any questions or get one of the items listed!

xoxo Beau
