Chic Pet Pieces For Your Home and How We Keep The House Pet Friendly
We’re both pet people through and through, and I actually can’t imagine living in a home without a friendly doggy or a sweet little kitty—even if they’re wreaking havoc. Thanks to our incessant oversharing online about our home decor, we get a whole lot of questions about how we keep up our furniture and decor while housing three animals.
It’s kind of a three part system:
We try to prep our space as best as possible by using items that are either not going to be damaged by our animals or won’t show wear and tear very easily. We’ve used Joybird’s pet performance upholstered furniture and Sunbrella’s performance fabric, as both allow for easy cleaning of any accidents and provide resistance to scratches and scuffs. We also use boucle a lot which already kind of looks like a cat toy, so a little scratching isn’t going to be the end of the world. For rugs we’re almost always using distressed rugs that don’t easily show stain or color variation, such as the Cavazzi Neutral Distressed Rug (currently half off!) in our Tennessee bedroom and the Madison Ivory Hand Knotted Rug in our New Orleans dining room; or we use vintage Persian rugs which are darker in color and incredibly busy, both of which help disguise stains. For the most part we stay away from leather, which we’ve learned is a magnet for our cats to pluck at, and we (try!!) to stick away from vintage upholstered furniture because the fabric is so easily torn.
Every animal is going to behave differently, so observing their behavior in your home is the next important step. Pay close attention to how your animals are living with and treating your items, and consider adjusting where in your home the animals are allowed based on what you see. In Tennessee, the big wood-paneled study is a no-go room for our cats because we keep a few pieces in there that they’d happily tear apart.
The final step in the system is to get over it. There’s going to be some trade off for the joy of having a loving furry friend in your home. Your cat doesn’t know or care how much you spent on that dresser they’ve turned into their personal scratch-n-sniff. Managing your expectations and accepting the fact that a piece you love could get damaged should be done before you bring a new fluffy friend (or new favorite piece) into your home.
Allll that being said, we do kind of hate how a lot of pet toys, beds, and accessories look when scattered about the house, so for all you decor-minded pet owners, we’ve put together a round up of our favorite aesthetically pleasing pet products for you :)
Let us know what you get!
CHIC Pet Pieces For Your Home
1.) Floating Cat Shelves $23+ | Healthy happy cats get lots of play and rest, and with the piece you can combine items to have places for your cat to do both those things, all while keeping clutter off the ground. With a kitty or two in those shelves it’ll look less like pet furniture and more like a living piece of art :)
2.) Cat Scratcher Side Table Combo $59 | I’m… obsessed? This piece is so cute but the scratcher part can actually rotate to be horizontal and act as a side table—one side is just wooden so it provides a flat surface for putting decorative objects or holding drinks in a pinch!
3.) Pet Storage Containers $32+ | These are actually storage containers for any of your storing needs, but we thought they’d be a great fit for storing pet toys, treats, and food to keep them all contained and off the ground or shelving.
4.) Checkered Pet Dish $65+ | I’ve never seen pet bowls so chic. I mean, wow.
5.) Side Table Pet Crate $500+ | Check out the product page to see it in action, it’s adorable! I love the idea of using this as a side table, especially in smaller homes where having a dedicated room or spot in the home for a pet crate is unattractive and a huge space commitment.
6.) Paxton Pet Bowl Stand With Storage (on clearance for $98!)| Those bags of pet food aren’t doing your home any favors, visually! This piece takes care of the problem for you and also gives you a spot to place food bowls for feeding time.
7.) Floating Cat Bed $186 | We love how this piece looks in the alcove of our blue hallway and the cats love it too! It’s such a visually pleasing piece of pet furniture!
8.) Dog Toy Set $33 | This is a great set for anyone who loves their lives to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Who knew dog toys could be so cute? The price point is amazing and it would be a great gift for your furry friend.
9.) Handwoven Pet Bed $139+ | If I were a dog I’d sleep in here all day… This would fit so perfectly into a huge variety of home decor styles, but I’m imagining it being an exceptionally good fit for the boho lovers and maximalists among us!
10.) Northwest Modern Dog Bed (was $599, is now $139!!!) | Sturdy and solid in construction, this bed is a great fit for those who love sleek, clean, and quality pieces that don’t rely on bells and whistles. I could imagine this beautifully styled in the window of a home with a midcentury modern or modern farmhouse interior style.
