It's That Time of Year! Tax Filing As A Small Business

BlockAdvisors

This post is in partnership with H&R Block. As always, all opinions are our own!

Between all the different room designs we do, DIY projects we come up with, and recipes we create, lots of very kind strangers on the internet say things like “is there anything you CAN’T do!”

What a sweet compliment, but we need to formally apologize for evidently leading you astray all these years. We’re actually terrible at so many things! To name a few: keeping our cars clean, having snacks on hand for hangry moments, and putting any effort into the business side of being a small business, like tax filing, bookkeeping, and payroll. We’ve worked with H&R Block’s Block Advisors this year and last to learn more about their services and give them a test drive to share our experience with you. They unfortunately said they can’t help us keep our cars clean or send us snacks, sorry.

One of the biggest and most frustrating parts of doing taxes as a small business is just having completely confusing and conflicting information online—how to file, what to file, dealing with random items like health insurance tax credits, and how to account for business expenses. The internet is vast and broad and any time we’d dive into trying to figure this stuff out on our own it would just result in glazed-over-eyes and confusion.

Luckily in 2017 we had the clarity to be like “Okay, yeah no, we can’t do this on our own” and brought on a tax professional to work closely with us on our small business. He was able to tell us how we should be filing, what we can and should expense, and then handle all of the actual paperwork for us. It’s been a dream, because, like I mentioned, we find it all incredibly overwhelming and confusing.

H&R Block's Block Advisors matches up small business tax professionals with small business owners to work closely on the exact needs of each small business. The whole idea being: uhhh you didn’t start your small business to spend all of your time worrying about back-end tax work, so let someone else handle it! Having seen first hand how beneficial working closely with a pro is, we were excited to meet with one of their Block Advisors ourselves and talk to her all about our small business, and learn how she works with small business owners across the board—from sole proprietors to businesses that employ dozens of people. She walked us through how Block Advisors tax pros can handle all the nitty gritty details of bookkeeping and payroll, as well as the actual tax filing itself.

Based on our personal experience with doing taxes for our small business (past headaches and current happiness) we strongly recommend you work with people who know what they’re doing for all of your business needs. Let us know if you have any questions about our experience, and check out H&R Block’s Block Advisors to get started with a small business tax professional!

xoxo
