The 2023 Benwood Pumpkin Patch Update
Well well well…it’s been about a month since we planted our pumpkin patch, and look who’s doing just dandy!! This time last year, we’d only just planted our seeds, so I’m stoked that this year we got a head start and have quite a few plants ready to start flowering.
If you read my first post, my goal here is to grow the biggest pumpkin I’ve ever personally seen in real life, and I think it’s going to happen. We’ve had hot sunny days that have filled the plants with nutrition and deep afternoon rains that have given their roots a good soaking every few days. Other than that, we’ve done very little in terms of amending the soil or spraying for bug and fungal infections.
If all goes to plan, we should be seeing our first fruit in the next couple of weeks, and by mid-September we’ll have selected which pumpkins we want to let mature. We’ll need to cull some of the less promising fruit to give our chosen ones first dibs on nutrients and the best shot at getting huge.
Check back in next month to see our progress!
