Everything We Used In Our Modern Victorian Living Room & How We Handle Design Disagreements
This week has had us embroiled in yet another design duel: choosing finishes for the bedroom suite. Having just finished up the living room and office redesigns, you’d think we’d be prepared to dive into just one more space without much trouble, right? Shouldn’t two people who have lived side by side for almost eight years, picking out every design choice together—everything from small curtain rod finials to an entire 19th century house—have some kind of groove by now? No. No dear reader I fear we do not.
Our living room and office design duel was actually the perfect duel for us, because we were each in charge of designing one of the rooms. When Matt wanted to use plaid wallpaper on the ceiling of the office, my heart sunk, but my lips stayed sealed (and I loved it in the end). When I wanted to build a table out of PVC pipes, Matt was definitely concerned but gave me nothing but positive encouragement. It went smoothly because there was a chain of command for each room. The bedroom suite, on the other hand? It’s one space with two commanders and every little decision requires some sort of limp-wristed tug of war until we reach a compromise. Typically we’ll end up doing a trade, like “Okay we’ll paint the room the shade of white you want, but we’ve gotta use the chandelier I want.” To be honest I think we both kind of love it––low stakes drama that results in a gorgeous space is the bedrock of our working relationship! And in the end, we end up with a room (and eventually a whole home) that has elements of each of our styles, coming together as one in a way neither of us would’ve ever been able to do alone.
But, back to the living room! We’ve had a few questions on what we used for this space so I wanted to just list every little thing I could think of in case you wanted to use some of the same pieces in your home :)
Chandelier: Modified Octavia Chandelier by Sazerac Stitches (we had Kirsten’s team combine the shape of the Orion chandelier with the floral finials of the Octavia to create a piece that had a total of twelve bulbs going in every direction).
Sconces: Double Prytania Sconce by Sazerac Stitches
Couch: Ms. Chesterfield by Interior Define in Snow Boucle
Coffee Table: DIY fluted coffee table by yours truly
Curtain Rings: Antique Brass Curtain Rings by West Elm
Curtains: Luster Velvet Curtain by West Elm in Dusty Blush
TV Frame: Antique Gold frame by Deco TV Frames
Ceiling Medallion: Flagstone Ceiling Medallion by Ekena Millwork
Crown Moulding: Odessa Leaf Dentil Crown Moulding by Ekena Millwork
Wall Paint Color: Intimate White SW 6322 by Sherwin-Williams
Door Paint Color: Tricorn Black SW 6258 by Sherwin-Williams
Rug: Vintage Persian rug from Heirloom Furnishings in New Orleans
Accent chairs: Victorian accent chairs from Consign Consign in New Orleans
We get pretty much all of our lighting from Sazerac Stitches, and it’s always the star of the show. The brass fixtures adds an elegance to the space that I’m in love with, and we used a 24” down rod to try and bring as much attention upward towards the high ceilings as possible, so that your eye continuously travels up and down. We used Sherwin-Williams for the paint, and their Intimate White and Tricorn Black came together to make the room feel airy but grounded, and feminine but stern, which was a balance I was aiming for. The sofa is from Interior Define, and even though we’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, it is absolutely my favorite purchase ever. We opted for the 38.5” depth, which is real deep, and I’m so happy with it. It’s been the perfect place to curl up with a glass of (white) wine and work or read in the evenings.
As with every space we’ve ever lived in, it’ll never be truly “done,” but it’s been so nice to have somewhere in the home that feels cozy and complete while we finish up the work on the bedroom suite.
talk soon love
