Our sunflower meadow before, during, and today!

The runner ducks had a field trip to the sunflower meadow the other day, and the photos are just so precious I could cry!!! When we first planted our sunflower seeds, I had no idea just a few months later we’d have little ducklings running through a field shaded by giant sunflowers, but what a nice turn this has taken.

The sunflowers were planted in June, and we used Mongolian Giant Sunflower Seeds from American Meadows in the hopes of getting the biggest possible flowers. While we didn’t quite achieve the size I imagined (this sunflower can grow to 12” in diameter!) I’m so in love with how it all came together ,and our long planting day was so worth it.

As for why we didn’t get our result, it came down to an inability to weed this huge swath of land, inadequate water, and an unwillingness to pay for the amount of fertilizer it would take to feed all these giants. Even with all of those roadblocks, the sunflowers had a very high germination rate!

We’ve cut some stems to share with friends and to style around our home and have enjoyed mornings and dusks walking through the field together, usually with little Fox by our side. Take a look at the progress over the months below, and let us know your sunflower growing tips — we’re all ears!
