Pumpkin Spice Bourbon Milk Punch

How long does it take for you to get back to normal life after traveling? Hours? Days? I always think of myself as being able to handle a lot of travel bc I like it so much or whatever and I would looooove love love to be the kind of person who gets on a plane with a briefcase and goes to a coffee meeting straight from the airport, and in my imagination this works because I'm a fierce 21st century global citizen and the whole world is my hometown.

But all of the actual evidence from all the times I actually travel DEFINITELY points to the opposite. Planes make me smell like falafel and somehow my best clothes never fit right on travel days. Oh, also, the actual travel time could be 14 hours or 2, either way I'm generally pretty zonked out for the rest of the day because, I don't know, "jetlag" is a fun buzzword to use to blame a short domestic flight for my fairly natural lethargy.

So while I guess I can't normally consider myself a quick travel recoverer, this Idaho trip we went on last week did a special little number on my body and my sleep cycle, which is pretty disconcerting since the time difference is just an hour. But gurl, we walked through our front door at 5 pm and did not leave the bed until 9 the next morning and I am INCREDIBLY ASHAMED to be publishing this on the world wide web, but I need to fully illustrate how amazing it feels to declare that my world is finally again normal.

Here's what normal looks like: we wake up, cuddle Fox, move our furniture around and decide we've finally got the perfect living room arrangement, take some pictures of food we made, and around 4pm bottles start popping and it's time for a cocktail. Oh also we're back to getting in heated Facebook arguments about the most controversial political contest in recent memory, and if you don't know that I'm talking about RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 2, you literally just don't know me. We're a firm #TeamKatya household and this past week's ROBBERY has left us shattered. Broken.

But life must go on, so exactly 100 dramatic sighs later, I was finally able to channel my rage into something creative. I started thinking about what we at Probably This do best, and I think you'll agree with my answer: we take super basic generic trends everyone unanimously hates on and make them okay to love with just a simple, obvious twist! So this week I was unironically craving a pumpkin spice latte, but since all the cool kids of the internet have made me feel intense shame for wanting such a thing, I found a little loophole, and where there's a loophole there's usually booze or something. In this particular loophole there's a whole lot of bourbon packed into a velvety smooth autumnal cornucopia of pleasure. Pumpkin spice bourbon milk punches! Recipe below, y'all!

Pumpkin Spice Bourbon Milk Punch

makes 2

  • 3 oz bourbon

  • 2 oz heavy whipping cream

  • 1.5 oz simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water)

  • .5 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

  • .5 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • pinch nutmeg

  • whipped cream (optional)*

  • orange peel and/or cinnamon stick for garnish

Combine bourbon, 2 oz heavy whipping cream, 1.5 oz simple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract in shaking tin. Add ice, shake, and strain into two glasses over fresh ice.

Top off with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Garnish with orange peel and/or cinnamon stick.

Whipped Cream

(the bartender way)

  • 2 oz heavy whipping cream

  • .5 oz simple syrup

Combine heavy whipping cream and simple syrup in clean shaking tin. Detach the coil of a Hawthorne strainer and drop into shaking tin. Shake vigorously until you can no longer hear the sound of the spring hitting the inside of the tin. Dollop whipped cream right on top of your drink or spoon it into a piping bag to have more control over the shape.
