The other night we were watching an Avengers movie and there was a scene where all of the Avengers were at a chic little party and I said “I want to go to that party.” Matt was like “uh… why?” because he knows I hate big parties and/or being around more than five people at once. My response? “The lighting is so lovely.” I know this makes me a loser, but I really am a sucker for good lighting. A sexy glow that illuminates faces and flickers off of wine glasses? Shadows that move and change and create mystery? Count me the hell in, boo.
Matt laughed so I had to tell him I was not joking. He said, “I know, that’s why I’m laughing.” We both appreciate a well lit space, but I’m the only one who’s ever pushed for an objectively worse restaurant over a better one that didn’t deliver on the ambience.
Lighting is so commonly a styling afterthought, but it absolutely shouldn’t be. Lighting is like music, or a scented candle. It helps create a vibe and set a mood. You (hopefully?) wouldn’t have friends over and sit in dead silence, right? You’d put on some music to help create a vibe. Well, bright and plain overhead lighting is the dead silence of lighting—sterile and mood-killing. Of course exceptions apply but the point is: put some thought into your lighting, bestie.
The cute thing about lighting is that unlike music or a scented candle, it goes way beyond just helping set a mood. It serves both a decorative purpose and a utility. Good lighting fixtures should be beautiful pieces of decor during the day and transition to mood-setting functional pieces in the evening. Lighting can be the central focus of a living room in the form of a grand chandelier, or a more minor detail that helps carry the rest of the room’s decor—but it should always be intentional.
The style and placement of your fixtures, and even the wattage and style of bulb used in them, all help define and signal a space’s form and function, so it’s imperative you put some thought into it! Sconces, pendants hung low, and lamps are all lovely ways to create a loungey effect in the evening. Moreso than overhead lighting, they create shadows and set a sexy mood mentioned above. Strip lighting behind furniture or bookshelves can also do the trick and is especially sexy in more modern home designs.
Any light fixtures you collect can be brought from home to home and are usually easily installed yourself, or easily hired out to a handyman for relatively little cost. They’re great investment pieces, so if/when your budget allows, consider adding lighting to your wish list of home decor.
We’ve got a couple more of our favorite lighting pieces below! Thanks for stopping by the blog sweetie!
