Howdy! Matt here with a little reveal for you! Welcome to our first makeover in the Tennessee house. We lived in the house for the whole summer and the rule we set for ourselves was to not make any major changes, because the plan was to spend some time getting a feel for the place—to see how we used the various spaces and establish the vibe we want the place to have—before tearing it up too much. It’s us, though, so… of course we had to break that rule! The one lucky room we fixed up this summer is our basement laundry room.

While we were excited to have a large space for laundry (our previous laundry rooms have always been closets!), this was about as drab as drab could get. The room doesn’t get a ton of natural light, relying on one small window to brighten up the space, and with it being in the basement we knew it needed a gorgeous paint color to help bring interest and excitement.

Neither one of us likes doing laundry, so I told Beau I’d spend some time making this a place we’d actually like being in. He knew I’d be using the Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color of the Year, Redend Point SW 9081, but that’s about all he knew! He didn’t know the ceiling and trim would be painted that same color; he didn’t know I’d repurpose the basement kitchenette’s island for a large folding table and paint it Ibis White SW 7000 for a light and bright storage and work table; and he didn’t know how I’d be styling it at all!

When I finally let him take a look, he was about as floored as I could ever have hoped for. We’re both head over heels in love with this paint color! Redend Point is so earthy, warm, and inviting. Just the paint color alone feels like home, and if you know us that might not be much of a surprise. We’re huge fans of earthy, blushy hues like this one. It’s neutral, but not shy–and in different lights it leans rather blush. That’s part of what makes it such a good choice for Color of the Year: It’s very versatile and we could see it being used in a multitude of spaces across different home styles.

We were so thrilled to get to work with Sherwin-Williams on their Color of the Year reveal for the third year in a row—(last year’s was the beautifully calming Evergreen Fog SW 9130 and two years ago was the gorgeous Urbane Bronze SW 7048!)—and we could not be happier with how this room came out.

I loved getting to surprise Beau with this project and the look on his face when he first saw it made all the work worth it. I may or may not have had to cut the folding table in half to fit it through the doorway–so there was a good bit of labor on my part, and I was glad to see it had paid off! This was the first time I’ve ever been able to do a surprise makeover like this for anyone and I lowkey kind of really want to do it again! But for now, let me share a few more images of this space with you.

The before! Not quite… inviting.

The before, angle 2!
