9 Black-Owned Home Decor Online Shops
The past couple weeks have been heartbreaking, uplifting, and eye-opening. It seems like, finally, the entire nation at once has woken up to understanding the gravity of systemic anti-Blackness in America. It’s not that this hasn’t been presented to non-Black people before—it has, and on the whole we’ve largely ignored it. But this time feels different, with large organizations that once vocally opposed the movement now committing their support, and cities like Minneapolis reevaluating their police and moving to defund the force and build something better. But even with all of this massive change happening at the macro-level there are countless dark crevices in the cliff of our society where racism has crept in like a mold, and been left to thrive.
We’ve all got things we can work on to break down this superstructure of racism. For us, that’s looked a lot of ways. We’ve been educating ourselves on what defunding of police forces would look like, listening to what Black thought-leaders are demanding, amplifying and summarizing those thoughts and demands to our audience, donating to organizations that have the systems in place to fight for racial justice locally and nationally, and working constantly to find new ways of supporting Black people in our daily lives.
One way to support Black people in an everyday, easy, and effective way is to be conscious and intentional with where our dollars go. We’re making a commitment to shop at and support Black-owned businesses more often, especially for home decor items we’ll be featuring on our blog. We invite you to do the same! If you’re going to spend money, do your best to direct those dollars towards Black-owned businesses, regardless of the industry.
Below we’ll be sharing nine Black-owned online home decor shops, most of which are small makers with really unique pieces. We’ve purchased from a few of them before, but as we prepare to buy pieces for our first home and have a few extra rooms to furnish, we’ll be turning to these and other Black-owned businesses first. So, in a way, while this is for your reference, it’s mostly a checklist for us to come back to when we’re ready in a few weeks :)
